The Quiet Economy

Why Scandinavian designers charge more for doing less.

By Mira Solberg · 7 min read

There is an economy in Scandinavian design that has nothing to do with money. It is the economy of restraint — the decision to remove rather than add, to subtract until what remains is irreducible.

We spoke with four designers in Copenhagen and Oslo who described their process not as creation but as excavation. The object was always there, they said. Their job was to clear away everything that was not it.

The result is furniture, lighting, and objects that feel inevitable rather than designed. They do not announce themselves. They simply belong.
